Significant changes have been made to entry rules, categories and preparation, so PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

ENTRY RULES

Recognition and encouragement of excellence in automotive journalism are the goals of the Texas Auto Writers Association’s annual Excellence in Craft Competition.

Eligible entries for the 2017 competition include automotive-related content that has been published or has an on-air date between Sept. 1, 2016 and Aug. 31, 2017.  All entries, except for those in the Spanish Writing category, must be in English.

The competition is open to all TAWA members in good standing. An eligibility exception applies to the two new-for-2017 national Texas Truck Invitational Writing categories, in which non-TAWA members are invited to participate. The 2017 category list also includes the addition of two Public Relations/Marketing categories for TAWA Manufacturer members.

TEXAS TRUCK INVITATIONAL

This competition invites TAWA members, along with non-members across the nation, to enter their works in exclusive truck-writing categories. A range of truck-related writing topics are eligible for entry, which cover light- and medium-duty passenger and commercial trucks – Classes 1-6 (up to 26,000 pounds GVWR) -- vans, SUVs and CUVs.

The experimental nature of the competition during its first year calls for a basic approach, steering the focus solely to writing excellence. Articles on the aforementioned topics are judged in general Newspaper and Magazine categories.

Importantly, along with traditional first-, second- and third-place awards, an overall award winner will be chosen from first-place winners of Newspaper and Magazine categories. This year, the top awardee will receive a Katzkin leather interior, valued at $2,000.

PUBLIC RELATIONS/MARKETING

Clear, accurate and complete press releases and press kits are critical for journalists. TAWA invites Manufacturer members to enter work in the EICC that best reflects these user-friendly qualities.

“GRAY-AREA” PUBLICATIONS

Publications that are not specifically categorized as a newspaper or magazine may enter in the best-matching category. Make a note on the entry form explaining the nature of the publication.

Writing categories are judged solely on writing excellence, and associated photography and graphics are not part of the judging criteria.

All entries must be published works. Up to six entries may be submitted in a single category, and entrants can enter in as many categories as they like. The same piece of work cannot be entered in separate categories, with the exception of a truck-related article, which can be entered in both a TAWA-members-only and Texas Truck Invitational categories.

There will be three different winners per category. An overall award winner will be chosen among the first-place Texas Truck Invitational category winners. In cases where more than one person (i.e. co-written article, radio show discussion, team page design effort) contributes to a winning entry, only one award will be presented.

A category must have at least six entries to be judged. Winning entries must meet a quality level determined by the judges. Rejected entries could lead to fewer than three awards in a category.

TAWA members entering duplicate truck-related articles in both the TAWA members-only and Texas Truck Invitational categories are eligible to win an award in both categories.

Entries will not be returned. Late entries and those without entry fees or completed entry forms will not be judged. Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than Aug. 31 to be accepted.

      NEWSPAPER AND MAGAZINE ENTRIES

Entries require the specific URL address in which the entry appears. If other articles appear at the same web address, a note must be included on, or attached to, the entry form that clearly directs the judge to the entry.

The entry must show the author’s byline, publication date and name of publication. Entries and entry forms must be emailed to texascar1@yahoo.com

In cases where an entry might be purged from a website before judging, a screen shot of the entry in original and complete published form can be emailed.

MAILING ENTRIES: Entrants have the option to mail entries. Print articles must be submitted in original tear-sheet form, with no folds other than the normal press fold. A tear sheet of each entry is required, with an entry form attached to each.*

*Texas Truck Invitational entries require TWO tear sheets for each entry, with an entry form attached to each.

The entry must show the author’s byline, publication date and name of publication. In cases where a story jumps to multiple pages, the article can be taped or pasted to heavier paper or cardboard backing to make entries easier for judges to handle.

Entries must be mailed in an appropriate-size envelope, which is large enough to accommodate tear sheets without additional folding or wrinkling. Insert a piece of cardboard in the envelope to decrease the likelihood of bending.

      PHOTO ENTRIES

Color and black-and-white photos are accepted. Both an original photo, as well as the published page showing the photo in printed form, is required. Both the original photo and printed copy will be judged.

      Emailed entries:

Entries sent by email must include the original photo at 3000x2400 pixels, and the printed page on which the photo appears. The page’s specific URL address must be included in the email. The printed piece must show the photo credit line, publication date and publication name. A screen shot of the page is acceptable in place of a URL address. The entry form must be included in the email.

      Mailed entries:

The photo must be sent in original form, and all work done to the photo must be by the entrant. One length of the photo must measure 10 inches. The photo must be placed in an individual envelope.

The published page on which the photo appears must be submitted in complete, clearly printed tear-sheet form, with no folds other than the normal press fold. The page must show the photo credit line, publication date and publication name.

Multiple photo entries cannot be included on a single tear sheet. Each entry requires a separate tear sheet and entry form attached to the tear sheet.

The original photo (in a separate envelope), printed page and entry form must be mailed in a single envelope, large enough to accommodate the materials without extra folding or wrinkling. Insert a piece of cardboard in the envelope to decrease the likelihood of bending.

      WEB ENTRIES

Entries require the specific URL address in which the entry appears. If other materials appear in the same web address, a note must be included on or attached to the entry form that clearly directs the judge to the entry.

The entry must show the author’s byline, publication date and name of publication. Entries and entry forms must be emailed to texascar1@yahoo.com

A screen shot of the entry, in complete and original published form, is acceptable in place of a URL address.

      PUBLIC RELATIONS/MARKETING ENTRIES

Entries for the Public Relations categories can be submitted via an emailed URL address or sent by standard mail.

Refer to the NEWSPAPER AND MAGAZINE ARTICLES rules. If mailed, entries require TWO copies, with an entry form attached to each copy.

      RADIO ENTRIES

Entries must be submitted as aired, unedited and be no longer than 8 minutes. All audio files must be via mp3 format at 192 kbps. Email the file(s) with the entry form and a letter from the station manager or program managers attesting to the on-air date.
